Current Lahore to Islamabad Motorway Toll Tax (M2)

The National Highway Authority (NHA) revised M2 toll rates by 7%, effective July 5, 2026, remaining in force until April 23, 2027, under the motorway’s concession agreement.

These are full-route charges. If you enter or exit at an intermediate interchange, such as Sheikhupura, Pindi Bhattian, or Kallar Kahar, your toll is calculated on the actual distance travelled, not the full-route rate.

M-Tag and the Non-M-Tag Surcharge

M2 toll plazas are equipped for M-Tag electronic collection, and NHA has previously required an active M-Tag with sufficient balance to use the motorway, with a 50% surcharge for vehicles without one. As of mid-2026, the Islamabad High Court has suspended NHA’s notification imposing this 50% surcharge on non-M-Tag vehicles, adjourning the case until August 3, 2026 for further hearing. Until this is resolved, confirm the current enforcement position at the toll plaza or on NHA’s official notifications before travelling, since the situation can change with the court’s next hearing.

Islamabad Motorway Toll Plaza

The main Islamabad-side toll plaza sits near the M1-M2 junction, serving as the primary entry and exit point between Islamabad and the M2 towards Lahore, Sheikhupura, and Faisalabad via the M4 link. It’s one of the busiest toll points in the country, since nearly all M2 traffic bound for Islamabad and Rawalpindi passes through it. Both cash and M-Tag lanes are available, though M-Tag lanes typically move faster with shorter queues.

Major M2 Interchanges (Lahore to Islamabad)

The M2 has 22 interchanges along its 375 km length. Key ones include:

Tolls between intermediate interchanges are proportionally lower than the full Lahore-Islamabad fare, based on actual distance covered.

How Toll Is Calculated

NHA charges toll based on the distance travelled between your entry and exit interchange, multiplied by the per-kilometre rate for your vehicle class. For the full Lahore-Islamabad run, this comes out to the flat full-route figures in the table above. For partial journeys, such as Lahore to Sheikhupura, the toll reflects only that segment’s distance.

Worked Example

Say you’re driving a car from Lahore and exiting at Pindi Bhattian, roughly 130 km into the motorway. At Rs 3.98 per kilometre, that’s approximately Rs 517. Compare this to the Rs 1,430 full-route fare for the entire 375 km Lahore-Islamabad stretch, and the distance-based logic becomes clear: you only pay for the portion of the motorway you actually use.
